Recyclers in the Spotlight

Congratulations and thanks to the following establishments for acting as community leaders in recycling:

Organics/Food Waste

The Kroger on University City Boulevard is the first business in Blacksburg to contract for composting services. Kroger is helping to keep food waste out of the landfill where it produces greenhouse gasses. The store currently recycles all food waste from its produce department, resulting in almost one ton of food diverted to composting each week. Kroger expects to expand to other departments soon. Poplar Manor Enterprises (PME) collects this material and composts it at their permitted facility in Riner, VA.

Business/Organization Recycling

The YMCA Thrift Shop not only recycles its own waste, it provides this valuable service to the community, free of charge! The Y has provided a community drop off site for recycling in the far left corner of its parking lot. This drop off site is a "single stream" recycling receptacle, meaning that all materials go into one container; no sorting is necessary. Both commingled containers and mixed paper are accepted here along with additional materials including #1 - #7 rigid plastics such as tubs, trays, & cups, clear plastic film contained in one bag, hard plastic items such as milk crates and buckets, and aseptic juice boxes. This service is provided in partnership with Waste Management's Recycle America.

Exper-T's is the first business in town to manage its waste with this single stream recycling program.

Apartment Recycling

Section 20-403 of the Blacksburg Town Code requires that all apartments and multi-family homes provide the same recycling opportunities to tenants as the Town provides to residents on its service (commingled containers and mixed paper).Terrace Viewhas long provided recycling to its tenants according to the requirements in the Town Code.It is now the first and only property in Blacksburg to provide a single stream recycling program.

BCR Properties has also made sure that its recycling opportunities for tenants are compliant with code. BCR has taken great strides to retrofit old recycling containers to provide mixed paper and commingled container recycling and all of its properties.

Any businesses, organizations, or apartment properties interested in any of the services mentioned above should contact the Office of Waste Reduction & Recycling at (540) 961-1806 or recycle@blacksburg.gov.
