Electronics Recycling
As part of a US EPA Resource Conservation Challenge Grant awarded to the Town in 2005, the Town of Blacksburg and the YMCA Thrift Shop partnered together to offer a new recycling opportunity to the Blacksburg community. This partnership established a free drop off program for Blacksburg residents to recycle electronics. Electronics that are reusable are sold in the Thrift Shop. Those that are not reusable are taken to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority to be recycled at Southeast Recycling Technologies, Inc. in Johnson City Tennessee. It is important to recycle electronics not only to keep waste out of the landfill, but also because they contain universal waste that is hazardous to the environment and human health if not properly disposed of.
The YMCA Thrift Shop is located at 1000 North Main Street. Electronics suitable for drop off include: CPUs, monitors, televisions, DVD players, printers, keyboards, VCRs, miscellaneous computer accessories (cords, mice, etc.). Visit the YMCA's website for more information.
The Goodwill drop off, located at 1413 North Main Street in the Patrick Henry Shopping Center, also accepts electronics for recycling. Electronics suitable for drop off include: monitors, computers, printers, scanners, hard drives, ink and toner cartridges and more. For more information, visit the Goodwill website.
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs and Batteries
It is important to recycle batteries and CFLs not only to keep waste out of the landfill, but also because they contain universal waste that is hazardous to the environment and human health if not properly disposed of.
CFLs, alkaline batteries, and ink cartridges may be dropped off for recycling at the following establishments in the community, free of charge. For safety purposes, please tape the ends of the battery terminals before placing them in the recycling bin.
