The Town of Blacksburg is divided into different zones that each have their own land use designation. Some areas are strictly for residential use, some are strictly for commercial use but most allow a little bit of both. Please be advised that driveways, and accessory structures, (sheds, etc.), require a zoning permit before they can be installed on your property. Please obtain a zoning permit application (pdf) and allow time for approval before you make arrangements for installation or delivery. Portable On-Demand Storage, (PODS), containers for moving or temporary storage require a permit. Please submit a POD application (pdf) and sketch for approval before the POD container is delivered to your property.
The keeping of up to 6 chickens in residential areas (R-4, RR-1, and RR-2 only) also requires a zoning permit. Approval of the keeping of chickens zoning permit (pdf) is required prior to installation of a pen or coop.
To do business in the Town of Blacksburg, first determine if the location's zoning designation allows for business use. If business use is allowed, please fill out and submit a Business License Application (pdf) with the Town of Blacksburg. Home occupations, (businesses run administratively out of the home), are allowed in every zoning district in Blacksburg, but please read the Home Occupation Ordinance attached to the Home Occupation Application(pdf) to make sure there are no violations.
If you are opening a new business in the Town of Blacksburg and wish to advertise with signage, please obtain a sign permit application (pdf) from the Planning and Building office before installing your sign. If you would like to display temporary signage at a property or business, please submit a temporary sign application (pdf).
