The Town of Blacksburg has a robust Parks & Recreation department featuring over 500 acres of parkland and programs offered are in excess of 1,000 each year.  The primary focus of this position is to actively manage the Town’s Community Center and oversee the management of the Town’s Aquatic facility.   Additional focus will be on the development of programming of recreational activities across all areas of the department, as well as the marketing of these activities. The position will oversee the scheduling and supervision of all resources at the Community Center.  This position is responsible for the efficient planning, scheduling and supervision of youth and adult classes and activities.  Selection and training of all Community Center staff, as well as the overall customer service approach exhibited in the facilities are additional responsibilities of the position.  Budget preparation and analysis is a requirement of this position.

Qualified applicants will have a thorough knowledge of the operation of a major recreation or community facility and possess a variety of knowledge in community sports and programs and the ability to plan, organize, promote and supervise community activities, sports and programs, as well as aquatic programs.  An aptitude for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with participants, associates, subordinates and the general public is required. Successful incumbents will have excellent customer service skills.  Aptitude to understand rules, policies and directions is required along with the ability to direct, lead, and motivate people.  Qualified applicants must have the ability to actually set up or take down class sites, to move around and inspect programs and to physically lead summer day camps that may include hiking, running and swimming.  A combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Sports Management or a related field and 5 years of managing a facility/system is required.  This position requires the obtainment of a CDL with a passenger endorsement within the first 12 months of employment in addition to an Aquatic Pool Operator certification.  A Certified Parks & Recreation Professional accreditation is also required within 12 months of employment.  A valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record are required. A satisfactory post offer pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant.

Starting salary range $58,160 - $72,600/year, depending upon qualifications. The Town of Blacksburg offers benefits that include: fully paid employee medical, dental and vision insurance; long-term disability insurance and life insurance.  Retirement benefits are provided through the Virginia Retirement System. Direct Deposit of pay is required for all full-time employees.
