The Planning & Building Department is seeking an experienced and energetic professional to join the Building Division team in the position of Building Inspector.
This full time position will assist the Building Official in conducting inspections for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code for all new building construction. This position will involve skilled technical work performing field inspections and re-inspections of residential, commercial and industrial facilities for compliance with building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes.
Qualified applicants are required to possess each of the following to receive consideration: thorough knowledge of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, Virginia Mechanical Code and the principles and practices of building construction including plumbing, electrical, and framing construction; the ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints; experience in the use of computers, software applications and the ability to learn new software applications as needed; and the ability to work independently and efficiently while maintaining close coordination with the building official, other inspectors and permit technicians. The selected applicant must possess excellent communication, customer service, organizational and time management skills.
A high school diploma or GED and considerable experience in the construction industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience are required. Preferred qualifications include Masters Trade Certifications and experience in the Building Code Inspections field. The selected applicant will be required to obtain the following certifications within 2 years from the date of hire: Combination Residential Inspector, Combination Building Inspector, Fire Protection, and Property Maintenance. A valid Virginia driver’s license with an excellent driving record is required. A satisfactory post offer pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant.
The starting salary range for this position is $34,626/year - $38,089/year, depending upon qualifications.
