Position will drive ACCESS vehicles to various destinations within the service area while following Blacksburg Transit policies and procedures. Operators will be responsible for assisting passengers on and off of vehicles by using a wheelchair lift or other mobility aids and by manually maneuvering wheelchairs as necessary. Additional responsibilities will include assisting passengers from the vehicle and to and from the entrance of their destination and being educated to assist in training newly hired Bus Operator I candidates.
Qualified applicants for this position must be 19 years of age or older, have a high school diploma or G.E.D., a valid Virginia driver's license and an excellent driving record. Qualified applicants must possess excellent communication and customer service skills. Applicants must also possess the ability to obtain a Virginia Commercial Driver’s License and First Aid/CPR certifications. Preferred applicants will possess a current CDL Class B license with a P endorsement and air brake certification and have experience dealing with the disabled public. A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position and the CDL drug testing guidelines will be followed during the employment period. A satisfactory post-offer, pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant. The hours of work will vary and include: day, evening, weekend and holiday work.
Starting salary range is $28,541/year - $31,396/year, depending upon qualifications. Retirement benefits are provided through the Virginia Retirement System. Direct Deposit of pay is required for all full-time employees.
