The Town of Blacksburg is seeking an enthusiastic, customer service oriented individual to work as custodian in various Town facilities. This position will mop, strip and wax tile floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; spray-buff tile floors; clean woodwork, windows, doors and walls; dust furniture and fixtures; clean lavatories and replace lavatory supplies; and dispose of waste and recycling. Employee may also be responsible for locking offices and buildings after cleaning.
Knowledge of the standards and practices of custodial work is required. Successful applicants must have the ability to operate and care for the tools and equipment (vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, etc.) used in general custodial work. In addition, applicants must be able to understand and follow instructions.
This position requires each of the following: a valid Virginia driver’s license; an excellent driving record; and the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds for a distance of up to 50 feet. Previous custodial experience is preferred. A high school diploma or GED is also preferred. Scheduled working hours for this position will be 3:30 PM – 12:00 AM Tuesday through Saturday with other hours assigned as required to cover vacations, holidays and emergency situations. A satisfactory post-offer, pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant.
Starting salary range is $21,731/year - $23,904/year, depending upon qualifications. Retirement benefits are provided through the Virginia Retirement System. Direct Deposit of pay is required for all full-time employees.
