Public Works Department

This position will perform manual labor, general maintenance and repair work on Town grounds, properties, and parks; operate walk behind mowers, riding mowers, string trimmers, spray equipment and hand-held tools in performance of duties; mow parks, ball fields, grounds, rights-of-way, and cemeteries; pick up trash along roadways and landscaped areas, and empty trash cans in parks; plant bulbs, flowers, shrubs and trees; weed, water, fertilize and apply pesticides; repair and aerate ball fields; operate dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, tractors and other small and medium weight equipment; paint shelters and playground equipment; and build and install playground equipment and other park related items. Position will perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned such as assisting with snow removal, special events, grave openings, brush collection, leaf collection, Christmas tree collection, and Fall and Spring cleanup.

Individual must be self motivated, and able to operate effectively in a team environment and work independently.  Individual must be able to follow and give accurate directions; lead small crews in the absence of crew leaders; interact and communicate with the public and other employees effectively; and perform minor mower and small engine repair. A high school diploma or GED is required.  A valid Virginia driver’s license and an excellent driving record are required.  A Commercial Driver’s License is required within six months of employment.  Individual must take and pass the registered technician’s pesticide examination within six months of employment. This position will follow the CDL drug testing guidelines.  The selected candidate must undergo and successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening.  A satisfactory post offer pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant.

Individuals must also be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly and 100 lbs. occasionally; carry 50 lbs. up to 100 feet at a time and 100 lbs. up to 25 feet; work in crouched positions for extended periods of time; consistently work outside in varying weather conditions; read basic street and traffic signs; drive and flag traffic.

Starting salary range is $22,774/year - $25,052/year, with benefits that include: fully paid employee medical, dental and vision insurance; long-term disability insurance and life insurance. With retirement benefits provided through the Virginia Retirement System. Direct Deposit of pay is required. Work hours for this position will vary.
