The Town of Blacksburg is currently recruiting for the position of Mountain Bike Camp Instructor with the Outdoors Program in the Recreation Department. The Outdoors Program offers an array of outdoor adventure and environmental education programs for co-ed youth groups and adults. Our programs highlight the natural beauty of the New River Valley and Southwest Virginia through canoeing, kayaking, caving, rock climbing, hiking, biking, camping and environmental education.
Mountain Bike Camp Instructors will be responsible for leading groups of 6-15 participants on day trips during the week and/or weekend. This position will provide sound judgment and decision-making skills to ensure the safety of each participant; instruct and facilitate skills programs and rides; manage group dynamics and foster a safe and energetic atmosphere where participants can gain mountain biking skills and an appreciation of the natural world. Applicants must be comfortable leading others in an outdoor setting and must be comfortable in a rustic situation with little to no facilities or amenities.
Applicants must have three or more years of experience; demonstrated skills in instructing youth in mountain biking; at least 40 hours of documented volunteer time with local recreation centers, bike shops, and trail groups; possess the ability to perform basic trail-side repairs such as: flat tires, broken chains, and shifting adjustments; and possess good communication skills and a strong desire to help others have fun and progress safely.
Applicants must also be comfortable leading others in an outdoor setting and demonstrate basic technical skills in mountain biking instruction. Applicants for this position must be 18 years of age or older to be considered and in good physical condition. Applicants should have or be willing to obtain current CPR and Basic First Aid certifications. A Bike Instructor Certification Program (BICP) certification (or equivalent) is preferred but not required. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certifications are preferred but not required. Other current mountain biking or outdoor certifications are a plus. A valid Virginia driver’s license and an excellent driving record are also required. Experience driving a 15-passenger van towing a trailer is preferred. A satisfactory post-offer, pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant.
Hourly rate range: $9.50 - $10.00 depending upon experience and certifications. The camp will be conducted during the week of July 29th through August 2nd 2019. Applicants must be available to work Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. This position will not exceed 1,500 hours during the initial year of employment or during the Affordable Care Act measurement period of April 1st through March 31st.
