Planning & Building Department

The Planning & Building Department is seeking an experienced and energetic professional to join the Planning Division team in the position of Planner II - Comprehensive Planner.   Under general direction of the Planning & Building Director, this position leads updates and amendments to the Comprehensive Plan and handles plan outreach and implementation. 

This position serves as staff support to Town committees such as the Greenway/Bikeway/Sidewalk Corridor Committee and the Historic or Design Review Board, in addition to serving on other Task Forces or Boards, such as the MPO Technical Advisory Committee, as needed.  Additional duties involve setting land use policies and goals under the direction of the Director and with other department staff.  Considerable interaction occurs with other Town Department staff members.  The position also serves as a liaison in coordinating with other jurisdictions and agencies in the region, as well as coordinating the Town’s Planning Intern Program for undergraduate or graduate students to work in a local government planning environment.

The Planner II will prepare written reports and give oral presentations to a variety of groups including the Planning Commission, Town Council and community groups. Strong writing and presentation skills are necessary to present information clearly and in an easy to understand manner.  This position also requires the candidate have the ability to facilitate meetings with committees, citizens or other groups.  Strong analytical skills are required to be successful in this position.

A Bachelor's degree with coursework in urban affairs, planning, geography, landscaping architecture or a related field and 3 - 5 years of experience in the planning field are required.  An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.  Preferred candidates will have municipal experience.  Certification through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is required within 2 years date of meeting AICP eligibility.  A valid Virginia driver’s license with an excellent driving record is required. The selected candidate will be required to complete a satisfactory post-offer, pre-employment criminal background investigation.

The starting salary range for this position is $42,378 - $52,972, depending upon qualifications. The Town of Blacksburg offers benefits that include fully paid employee medical, dental and vision insurance; short-term and long-term disability insurance (as applicable) and life insurance. Retirement benefits are provided through the Virginia Retirement System. Direct Deposit of pay is required for all full-time employees.
