This position will assist in the maintenance and repair of all traffic control devices throughout the Town. The primary responsibility will be to produce, install and repair street identification signs, roadway signs and posts. Other duties will include assisting with the maintenance of pavement markings. Position will be responsible for work zone safety that includes flagging traffic and setting up safety cones and work site barricades.
Qualified applicants must be able to use or have the ability to learn to use a personal computer to maintain a sign and signal inventory and to learn the use of a graphics plotter to make signs. The selected applicant must also learn specialized software for various traffic control devices and acquire knowledge of both Federal and State standards for traffic control devices, their installations and maintenance.
Qualified applicants must also be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and 100 pounds occasionally; carry 50 pounds up to 100 feet and 100 pounds up to 25 feet; work in crouched positions for extended periods of time; work outside in varying weather conditions; drive; flag traffic; understand and give accurate directions, read basic street and traffic signs, and communicate effectively with both the public and other employees.
Required are a high school diploma or GED, a valid Virginia driver’s license and an excellent driving record. The selected candidate must undergo and successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening. A satisfactory post-offer, pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant.
The hourly rate range is $11.00 - $12.00, depending upon qualifications. This position will not exceed 1,500 hours during the initial year of employment or during the Affordable Care Act measurement period of April 1st through March 31st.
