Are you interested in the historical and contemporary traditions and lifeways that connect a diversity of Appalachian peoples—past and present—to the medicinal herbs and wild foods of the Appalachian forests? Do you want to learn more about how you can help protect and propagate these special plants yourself? In this presentation and tour, Shannon Bell, Professor of Sociology at Virginia Tech, and Carol Davis, Town of Blacksburg Sustainability Manager, will share how the Shadowlake Village Forest Garden is blending invasive species removal with the cultivation of at-risk Appalachian forest botanicals. This event includes a presentation in the Shadowlake Village Common House followed by a tour of the project area and a hands-on volunteer opportunity. IMPORTANT - All numbered parking spots are reserved for residents. There are a limited number of visitor spots, therefore carpooling is strongly recommended.
- Location: Shadowlake Village Common House 1741 Ginger Lane (this is the meet-up spot, the forest farm is a short walk down the hill)
