Sustainable Blacksburg will hold a virtual lunch and learn on April 28 at 12:00 pm. Lunch and Learn topics will include an overview of the City Nature Challenge, presented by Will Lattea, Energy & Environmental Specialist with the Town of Blacksburg, and Enrique Rebolledo from the YMCA at Virginia Tech will talk about the annual YToss event.

The City Nature Challenge is an annual global event, taking place in communities across six continents Friday, April 30 to Monday, May 3. Current and aspiring community scientists, nature and science fans, and people of all ages and education backgrounds are invited to observe and submit pictures of wild plants, animals, and fungi within the boundaries of the Town of Blacksburg using the free mobile app iNaturalist.

The annual YToss event collects gently used items from VT students during move-out, and makes them available to incoming students during the fall move-in sale on campus. All profits from the YToss support YMCA Student and Community Programs. Since its inception, the YToss program has diverted more than 100 tons of still-useful items from the landfill and generated over $60,000 to support student-led programs that benefit the whole community.
