Education is a central part of life in Blacksburg. As part of the Montgomery County Public Schools system, the town is served by seven public schools: five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Each school is fully accredited under the Commonwealth of Virginia's Standards of Learning.

In addition to its public schools, Blacksburg offers several private schools, as well as a variety of full-time and part-time daycare centers and preschool programs.

Blacksburg is also home to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, better known as Virginia Tech. The university offers more than 110 bachelor's degree programs and over 170 master's and doctoral degree programs, serving more than 38,000 full-time students. One of the defining characteristics of Blacksburg is its strong town-gown relationship with Virginia Tech, which fosters collaboration between the university and the local community and contributes to the town's vibrant educational and cultural environment.
