By providing objective, time-stamped vehicle data, the system supports evidence-based policing while reducing reliance solely on eyewitness descriptions. The technology is intended to deter criminal activity, improve case clearance rates, and strengthen collaboration with neighboring jurisdictions. Importantly, the department uses these cameras within established policies and legal guidelines to balance investigative effectiveness with community privacy expectations. All use of automated license plate reader technology is conducted in accordance with the Code of Virginia § 2.2-5517 and other applicable state laws governing data collection, access, retention, and privacy protections.
