RZN20-0001/ORD 1932-Request for a Special Signage District in the DC Downtown Commercial Zoning District at the Lyric Theatre on 0.215 acres at 135 College Avenue (Tax Parcel No. 256-A90) by Greg Boatwright (applicant) for Lester Properties (property owner).

The Blacksburg Planning  and Building Department has received a rezoning request for a special signage district for the historic Lyric Theatre at 135 College Avenue.  The Lyric building is a contributing structure in the Town of Blacksburg Historic or Design Review Overlay zoning district.

The existing signage is non-conforming.  The purpose of a Special Signage District is to allow an applicant to request more signs or different sizes, types and locations of signs than would ordinarily be allowed by the underlying signage regulations.

The Lyric is requesting a special signage district to replace the two existing "hanging letter" style changeable copy signs that comprise the marquee and display event information with two similar size digital LED changeable copy signs. It also proposes the addition of neon-style red LED tube lighting in the recessed facade signage that was part of the original Theatre facade.  Other existing signage elements such as the metal poster cases and the illuminated identification sign between the two sides of the marquee will be retained.
